C3 - Idea Development #3 - Storyboard and Timeline

Storyboard and Timeline

Here is my storyboard and some rough scene timeline of my projection mapping plan.
The storyboard is the scene of the montage that plays and projected on the stage.

C3 - Idea Development #2 - Mannequins and Stage Area

Idea Development #2 - Mannequins and Stage Area

Mannequin

Mannequin is one main important item for my project. Well, if you don't know what mannequin is, it is just a display doll or dummy that you can find mostly on fashion boutiques or tailors. It is designed to display the fashion clothing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannequin

For this idea development, I need to know more and understand on how to do a better projection mapping effect. At this point, I need to think about on how to handle the position the mannequin with the area space or stage and also choosing the type of mannequins.

Since it is built with different poses, I need to consider which pose  or posture is suitable to provide clear visual mapping.

Some sketches of type of poses for mannequins:

The provided sketches could help me to find better poses or postures of the mannequin that I am going to use for my experiments or/and my final build of the installations.

The mannequins are usually built with open postures where most of upper body parts are exposed widely, for easy clothing display. It is better to find the mannequins with their upper body parts exposed, rather than with folded arms that blocked the view of the chest area.

Some samples of real mannequins photos and images that help for the project:

For the build quality of mannequins, I prefer to get a clear, matte-looking type of surface because they will not get reflected by lighting sources and also provide less reflection that make the projected image looks clear on mannequins surfaces. As you can see from the images above, some mannequins have shiny-looking, reflective surfaces. Eventhough a plastic or polystyrene mannequin does not provide too much reflective surface, but the quality of the mannequin could be a bit problem for my projects since it is not really durable.

Stage and Projected Space

For the stage, it is recommended for me to have bigger spaces area.
The stage area involved a wider wall panel that acts as a background. It is positioned behind the mannequins.
The wall panel serves as background drop from the projected visual. When the visual is projected, the wall panel will shown the background of the certain scenery or effects.

So, as for the ideas, I am stuck with the chosen shape and design of the wall panel. I wonder if I want to make a flat panel or rounded wall panel(to make it look like a panoramic scene).

After sketching the plan and things, I decided to go for three-sided flat wall panel to be as a background.
It is because the 3-sided panels provided large range of space that is good for my background scenery. Plus, with some extra panel, it is good to show a lot of things for the background.

So, here is how my floor plan will look like for the installation:

The projector projects the visual from PC or laptop to this wall stage area. The mannequins are there to become a figure that wear the fashion clothing that will be showcased through the projected visuals. The wall panels act as background of the certain scenery. When the montage is running, the background will show certain scenery, animations, special effect, lighting effects and texts, according to my storyboard of the video timeline.

C3 - Idea Development #1 - Ideas and Plans

Idea Development - Ideas and Plans

Project Title: ???
Concept: Real Time Projection Mapping Installation

For the final project, I decided to do projection mapping on the objects that involves projecting video/motion/visual from the projector to the stage area.

The idea, technically, is about the projection mapping of a fashion style that available in Malaysia. The mannequin is used as a human figure that indicates urban people in Malaysia. The mannequin will become a people or citizen or resident of a Malaysia that tells you how the urbanism societies will depend on our fashion type and trend. As the mapping goes, it projected the animated visuals (whether animation, motion videos or special effects) to the mannequin and the stage background.

There is no interaction (as far as I am really concerned) for the viewers to try. The installation is almost like a showcase videos. The installation also almost the same as fashion show events.

The idea was heavily inspired from the previous project done by LCI Productions.

The whole idea that I want to perform is pretty much similar like the example in the video above, but with my own generated contents.

Here is a rough sketches of the projection mapping idea.

As you can see the sketch above, it is just a rough idea of how my area of the projection mapping looks like.
The wall area will need large space to project the background, like for example, a background of a city, houses, etc...

Overall, the idea of the project is about a projection mapping showcase of a mannequin wearing different kinds of fashion style that available in Malaysia.

Research Analysis & Criticiality

Based on the research that I conducted at this point, I have
analyzed the information that I have got so far on my research

Points:

- The fashion/clothes they are wearing will depend on the weather.

- People are mostly wearing casual

- Most outfits they are wearing have dark color

- People will wear something different on certain events

- Not many people wear the same color choices of their overall outfits

Based on the observation of the fashion show that I witnessed:

- The event showcased some weird and unique fashion style

- None of the fashion shown are normal-looking.

- Unique fashion can only be seen on unique event, such as fashion show

Here are the break down of the response that I got from the interview.

“People will wear fancy clothes when they attend any special events”

“Wearing a nice, good-looking fashion is not only because of its popular, but also to show that we can afford to wear them.”

“Fashion is more on visuals, rather than telling them in words, or describe it”

“We actually love our traditional costumes, just not really a good idea to wear them in the public area.”

“Our fashion lifestyle is mostly influenced by the international media than in the local. The best example is the current trend K-Pop from Korea”

There are some other things that I want to get based on the current results research that I conducted, which are mostly did not reach to my expectation.

- To find a group of people wearing the same, trending fashion style

- To find any ethnic people that can talk about the cultural fashion

Research Progress - Results

Here are some of the results of the research that I conducted at this point:

Videos:

*Videos will be uploaded

- Taken at KLCC area, where PC Fair event took place.

 *Videos will be uploaded

- Taken at MODA fashion show in Pavilion

Sketches

Some few sketches that I did based on my observation of the people in certain places and location

Reasearch Progress - Methodology

Before I conducted a reasearch, I made some plan like choosing location and techniques, and
also targeted people.

Location
- KLCC
- Bukit Bintang Area
- Pavilion
- Lowyat Plaza
- Times Square

Target audiences
- Woman/Teenagers

Special Events
- PC Fair, KLCC

- MODA Fashion Show: Pavilion, KL

My research methodologies consist of:

- Observation using a medium

By using digital recorder equipment, such as camera, I do the record of the activity
of people as a part of my observation. Recording the activity of people is easier for me
to review all kinds of activities of people.

- Sketches

I also doing the sketches when observing the activity of the people in the certain locations/places.
Sketching is a good way for me to draw what kind of fashion they are wearing. This will also helps me to practice more sketching out the idea for the final idea in more artistic way.

While sketching, I provided some points of the fashion/clothes the people are wearing, like type of clothes, colors and so on.

- Interview

Once I got the information from the observation, my next step is to conduct the interview for the public to understand more about the fashion trends. I did not really provide specific question for the interview and the questions will be given randomly based on the response of the the public, so that I can get further information based on their knowledge about the fashion trend. Here are some generals questions that I asked for the public:

-What type of clothes that people like to wear?
- What is the reason you wear specific clothes?
-Do people wear certain clothes actually been affected by something or they just simply wear them?
-If their clothing affected by something, is it mostly because of:
 * Media/People Influences?
        * Weather?
        * Events?
        * Personal preferences?
        * Customs Practices?
- Do fashion determine the status of the person (like rich people will wear nice clothing design than normal people do)?

The location to conduct the interview is still remain the same, but in different time and date.
My target people for the interview is mostly focus on teenagers, since they most likely know anything about trend issue and fashion lifestyle.
