Project Progress - Clothing Graphics

Project Progress - Clothing Graphics

Here are some sample of clothing images that are used for projection mapping on mannequin

Project Progress - Editing with Software

Project Progress - Editing with Software

The next step is to create the contents for the projection by editing the video.

Some softwares that I used to create the basic montage include:

Adobe PhotoShop

- The software is used to edit the image and manipulate the photo
- I mostly used this for mannequins clothing
- By using the photo reference of my project stage, I made a template for my mannequins placement and made it in white color
- Then, for clothing effects, I made separate layers

Sony Vegas

- This software is for editing the montage purpose
- I also use this software for sound editing.

Project Progress - Setting Up The Area

Project Progress - Setting Up The Area and Testing

Upon starting up the project, I need to set up the area (in the studio) of where my mannequins will be placed.

The first set up was like this:

As seen in the pictures above, there are 3 panels and two mannequins. I need to consider the distance between the mannequins and the wall panels.

After that, I made a small experiment and test of the projector:

By using a simple program, MS Paint, I just made a simple calibration to see whether the graphics that projected to the mannequins were visible or not. The test result was great and it seems that the mannequins are able to show the colors very clearly, if the lights in the surrounding are turned off.

Title: Urban Fashionista

Urban Fashionista is a real-time projection mapping installation art that showcases a montage of different kinds of fashion design in the urban lifestyle. It involves the projection mapping of a montage into two mannequins that have been setup on the stage area, in front of the wall panels. The mannequins represent the people in the urban society (male and female), while the wall panels act as background to show different kinds of sceneries.

The purpose of the projection mapping art is to invite the audiences to watch a unique showcase of different type of clothes that people in our societies are wearing and to show what kind of fashion style and trend that are popular in the current generations. It will also gives the audiences some general ideas and understandings of how different events and environment will affect the overall fashion and clothing in the societies. With its unique montage visuals, the audiences will be able to understand the selection choices of fashion, including traditional and ethnic clothes that available in Malaysia societies.

The mannequins will be the main subject for the audiences to focus as the video montage starts to project on the stage. By using the computer projector, the montage will start to project the video that shows the unique visual montage that showcased different designs of fashion and clothing onto the surface of the mannequins, accompanied by different background musics and interesting background scenery.

C3 - Content Development #4 - Fashions/Clothing Editing and Designs

Fashions/Clothing Design

Now, I am going to make some clothing design, based on the researches that I conducted before. So, looks like I am going to be a fashion designer for this project, except without sewing and tailoring. For now, I still do not have the mannequins in my possession, so the designs and postures of the mannequins is in just random style. At this point, I just practice myself in designing the clothes for storyline.

So, maybe I should start with simple stuff by sketching how my mannequins should look like. Right now, I am using Photoshop to draw the mannequins template.

Next, I am going to sketch the clothing design. From here, it is all based on my concept arts, storyboards and flowcharts. Here, I just made examples by making out certain theme like what kinds of clothes/fashion that are available in Malaysia

For now, I am going to make three local traditional cultural outfits that available in Malaysia, such as Baju Kurung, Cheongsam and Sari for female and for male is Baju Melayu, Dhoti and the other one is not sure what should I call the outfits for Chinese men to wear (help me to get its name, please..).

Then, by using any references and sources that I collected, I make some few sketches first.

Cultural Outfits for Men in Malaysia

Cultural Outfits for Women in Malaysia

For the outfits, I prefer to make a darker clothing, so it will not blend with the surface color of the mannequins.

Now, I design the clothes according the position and the shape of the mannequins by using tracing method. Here are the results:

Now, all these clothes design can be applied to the mannequin and these are they will look like when wearing the clothes:

Although these are just in digital image art, but when applied the same method through real time projected visual, the result is the same.

So, for next step, I will going to make the backgrounds using the same concepts. Both background and clothes design should have the same theme, like for Malay culture outfits, will most likely have a background of old traditional houses scenery or 'kampung' style. It gives a right feel towards the viewer to see the scenery and fashion match.
